What is a Deus Ex Machina?

God of the Machine.

Basically its when at the end of the play a god/deity descends from the heavens and makes everything right again. What is a Deus Ex Machina?
In theatre history (as early as the Greeks) many plays ended with a God that comes from the heavens to resolve the story. It was known as the God in the machine because an actor was lowered down from above in a mechanical contraption.

Today, the term can refer to any device or cliche used to quickly tie up loose ends in a story and return everything to normal. I think it's often seen as a cheap and easy plot device to finish a story when the playwright doesn't know what else to do.
