What exactly is 'Deus ex Machina'?

Translation, God from the Machine. Refers to plays in ancient Greece where one of the Gods of Olympus would appear to save the day. The actor playing the God was lowered onto the stage with a primitive machine, hence the name.

Used in modern writing to describe a hero or team of heroes arriving on the scene at the last minute to solve all the problems. Also used to describe any easy way out which solves everything for the characters, people in severe debt finding a winning lottery ticket, for example.

Usually considered a cop-out and poor writing.

A good example is Rose Tyler becoming both a figurative and a literal Deus ex Machina when she steps out of the Tardis filled with the time vortex to disintegrate the daleks. What exactly is 'Deus ex Machina'?
It's a resolution to a hopeless situation. For instance, everything possible that could go wrong is happening and suddenly Superman is there saving the day. What exactly is 'Deus ex Machina'?
