Examples of deus ex machina in literature?

deus ex machina is when the hero of the story is "saved by god" not necessarily literally but its kinda like when the hero is about to die and then somehow out of nowhere he is saved! like in the second harry potter when he is in the chamber of secrets and the sword is dropped by the phoenix who cries on him and saves his life. Any examples would be greeat!! :)Examples of deus ex machina in literature?
You could call the ending of Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum" a deus ex machina. Our unfortunate hero is within a few seconds of meeting his death in the prisons of the Spanish Inquisition when just at the last minute a foreign army captures the city and frees him.Examples of deus ex machina in literature?
The River (Sequel to The Hatchet) by Gary Paulsen. For more, type deus ex machina into wikipeadia and it will give you exsamples.
